17th October 2011
The election polls is closed now. The winner will be announced on Wednesday 19th Oct.
A few points should be clarified though. Indeed, it is early in the term for an election to take place, but this is due to the way in which the motion was passed, and the need to create a position as soon as possible for the current intake of VS Students.
In order to vote you need to register on the site. If you have any problems with that, email
anton.hinel@stcatz.ox.ac.uk for help.
The position of VS Rep was created in the last open meeting of Trinity Term 2011. The idea emerged from a former visiting student, who was largely dissatisfied with the treatment of visiting students at Catz. He resolved to establish a position on the JCR Committee, which would allow their concerns and grievances to be directly addressed by the JCR, and encourage more participation by visiting students.
The duties of the Visiting Student Rep are as follows:
i. To act as the voice of visiting students and serve as a liason between visiting students and the JCR committee.
ii. To work with the current visiting student administrator to improve the quality of life and academic structure for visiting students.
iii. To help organize visiting student events and keep a visiting student mailing list.
iv. To organize a smooth transition between incoming and outgoing visiting students.

Hello Catz,
For the third time in my presidency I have been requested to help encourage you all to complete the Tutorial Teaching Questionnaires landing in your pidge's and circulated by email. And this is the first time I am genuinely pleased to do so, as if we take action I believe we can use the forms to bring an end to this wholly inadequate and ineffective system of feedback.
Last month I introduced the idea of simply filling in the questionnaires with 'I want Academic Feedback Sessions' ( http://jcr.stcatz.ox.ac.uk/node/669 ), now it is time to do this, and take three seconds to take back the power to affect your education.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask, but, for the main, my last request as president is simple, take the time to write one sentence which will have a huge impact in showing the Governing Body that student opinion at St Catherine's is to be taken seriously. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=122741331139807
Thank you in advance,
Aidan
Background information is below:
Governing Body says that only if Tutorial Teaching Questionnaires sponse rates rose as high as 50-60% (the actual response rates this year still falling well short of 20%) would they consider the JCR’s proposal for an alternative.
Yes, you read that right: only if the Tutorial Teaching Questionnaires began to work, would Governing Body contemplate scrapping them.
I don’t need to tell you this makes no sense whatsoever!
Worst of all, if return rates were to rise, I am certain the college would turn around and say ‘We knew it all along. There’s nothing wrong with the questionnaires.’ What else could they do? It would only be reasonable. We’ve been thoroughly played and, doubtless, will find ourselves going another year without any appropriate means of effecting our education if we do not take action.
So, what is to be done?
We play them at their own game. When this term’s questionnaire lands in your pigeon-hole, I want you and every member of the JCR - if you care a jot over the power you hold over your education – to use it to request Academic Feedback Sessions. We’ll give them their 50%, but they might not like what we have to say.
FILL IN YOUR TUTORIAL TEACHING QUESTIONNAIRE WITH 'I WANT ACADEMIC FEEDBACK SESSIONS.'
You can read more about Academic Feedback Sessions here: http://jcr.stcatz.ox.ac.uk/node/656
