2013-2014 Committee

Shan Chang
Hi there, I’m Shan, a second-year PPEist from New Zealand, and the JCR President for the next academic year. My role is to generally work to sustain and improve the quality of life for the college’s undergraduates by representing their interests and views to the SCR and the wider university, and by assisting other members of the committee in lobbying on behalf of new initiatives, such as improvements to staircase kitchens and 24-hour library opening. I also have a number of constitutional obligations, including chairing open meetings and committee meetings, supervising elections, and coordinating Freshers’ Week. Finally, I do a fair bit of behind-the scenes work; the treasurer and I negotiate the yearly rent and food price increases, and I sit (along with the respective committee reps) on all sorts of committees that you probably didn’t know existed, including the student liaison committee and the fabric committee (which sounds ridiculous but is actually pretty important). If you have any queries about the JCR in general, or any gripes/new ideas, please don’t hesitate to get in touch; I don’t really do any work so you won’t be interrupting anything.

Ashleigh Ainsley
As the JCR Vice President, my role is to assist the President in his duties, with specific responsibility for the assigning of students’ accommodation, organising college photographs (matriculation, sports and leavers photographs) and running the DVD library. I support the President at both open meetings and in other JCR affairs and in addition I attend OUSU (Oxford University Student Union) meetings where I am able to represent the views of the Catz JCR.
Feel free to get in touch with me regarding any questions or queries whether big or small about anything (I always respond to emails and want to get stuff done) at

Patrick Tesh
Hi I’m Paddy, a third year Mathematician, and I’m your JCR treasurer! This means that handle the JCR’s finances. I manage our accounts, and sort out paying for any JCR events and subscriptions. I also meet with the college Bursar and ensure that the JCR gets the best value for money when using college facilities, including negotiating rent increases and punt hire prices! Whether you have questions about JCR funding, or about managing your own finances in Oxford, feel free to email me at patrick.tesh@stcatz.ox.ac.uk.

Domestic Liaison Officer

Awinnie Inusa
Hey! I’m Awinnie and I’m your Domestic Liaison Officer for the next year. My role is to help ensure that college is a comfortable place to live and also to put forward ideas that can make it even better. As a part of the Fabric subcommittee, I’ll be attending meetings to discuss future plans for projects around the college that will make a difference to life in Catz. I’m also responsible for making sure there is enough space around college for international students to keep their belongings in over the holidays. If you have any issues/suggestions concerning hall, cleaning or other domestic matters, don’t hesitate to drop me an email and I’ll do my best to help you out!

Callum Kelly
Hi Catz! I’m Cal, your JCR secretary for the year ahead. My role on the committee is focused on the smooth operation of JCR open meetings; I collect in motions from the JCR, compile the agendas in the week running up to the meetings, and then take minutes when the meetings are in session. I also help to disseminate information around college by keeping the notice board up to date as well as emailing around notices and the biweekly newsletters. Come the JCR elections, I am also responsible for collecting and publishing the candidates’ manifestos. If you have any queries, or want to submit a motion for the open meetings, please feel free to drop me an e-mail or stop me in passing; I’ll be more than happy to help!

Female Welfare Rep

Lisa Staniforth

Male Welfare Rep

Wilkie Hollens

Hi we’re Lisa and Wilkie and we’re your Welfare Reps for the coming year. We work with the peer supporters to promote the welfare and happiness of all those in the college by running peer support drop-in sessions where you can talk to one of us about anything that may be concerning you. These operate in the strictest confidence. Alongside the many other events we’ll be running throughout the year, we also run a weekly “Sunday Welfare” in which anyone and everyone is invited to come down to the JCR to enjoy free food, chat and relax. We’re here to help you with any matter, big or small, so don’t hesitate to be in touch!

You can also email us or click the “condom button” on the welfare section of the college website and we will dispatch condoms, lubricant etc. to you as soon as possible, all with complete discretion – no questions asked.

Charlie Baker
Hi, I’m Charlie Baker, a 3rd year Linguist and I am St Catz rep to OUSU – the Oxford University Student Union. I also held the role in my 2nd year and am really pleased to be back on the JCR Committee, doing a job I feel passionately about. Whilst many people may feel at best apathetic and at worst resentful towards OUSU, I’m here to show members of the college the benefits brought by our Student Union, as well as to communicate your ideas and opinions to the powers that be at headquarters. My job involves attending fortnightly Council meetings, as well as fortnightly OUSU rep meetings, where I will vote on motions on behalf of the college and bring up any issues we have. For particularly controversial or important motions, I will endeavour to send out an online poll, to ensure that I am really representing the diverse views at St Catz. Also remember that anyone can bring up a motion at OUSU Council – for details on how to do this, please get in touch! Also if you have any comments/questions/something you want doing, drop me an email at charlotte.baker@stcatz.ox.ac.uk.

Clubs and Socs Rep

Stephanie Austera
Hi! I’m Steph, and I’m the Clubs and Socs Rep for this year. It’s my job to look after this important part of college life so that everyone can enjoy and benefit from it as much as possible. There is a strong clubs and societies scene here at Catz, encouraging the all sorts of non-academic interests including sport, music, drama or any of the many other societies. My specific duties include spreading the word about opportunities to get involved, organising the budgets for each club or society, and enabling the creation of new societies if there is a demand from the student body. Questions and suggestions are welcome so please get in touch!

Entz Reps

Matthew Fisher
Imogen Sharkey-Ochoa

Charities Rep

Tom Damant
Hi I’m Tom, the JCR Charities Rep for this coming year. My aim is to increase participation throughout the college in both fund-raising and volunteering. As a College we support Emilies Charities, set up in memory of Emilie Harris who was tragically killed in a cycling accident in Oxford, which helps less privileged children in the developing world. We also support another charity, voted on each year by the JCR, which last year was CARF UK. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any suggestions you may have about charity at Catz.

Publications Rep

Martin Dickson
Hey Catz! I’m Martin, a Catz lawyer and your Publications Rep for the year ahead. My role on the committee is a bit different to the other roles in that I don’t really represent much, apart from good publications, which doesn’t sound quite as important as promoting equal opportunities – hence why the role is sometimes called ‘Publications Officer’. I’ll be in charge of making the Freshers’ Guide and Alternative Prospectus, but will be available throughout the year to help any of you with any logo-making or publication-producing requirements you have, so get in touch if you want to start promoting a new society! I’ll also be aiding in the production of ‘Catz Litter’, so also come to me with any embarrassing stories (amongst other things, including photos, anecdotes and achievements) that you want to share with the rest of Catz!

IT Rep

David Furlong
Hey! I’m David, the only a Computer Science and Philosophy student at Catz.
As the IT Rep I manage this website, run online polls and manage the mailing lists. I am also the interface between the JCR and the college IT staff/facilities. So if you have any suggestions, ideas or any IT related concerns feel free to drop me a line.

Daniel Templeton
Hey! I’m Dan and I will be the LGBTQ Rep for Catz this year.
Most importantly, I’m here to provide welfare to any Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/ Questioning members of college. Whether it be night or day, rain or shine, I’m here to help you with ANY problems you may have whilst at Catz and to make sure that you have a comfortable and safe time in St. Catherine’s. Also, I’ll also work with the rest of the committee and the college to ensure LGBT participation in college life and to lobby for LGBT rights.
The most enjoyable part of the role though, is to ensure that you have a fun time whilst in Catz! I’ll organise crew dates and social events within Catz itself, with other colleges and with LGBT Soc.
So, in the immortal words of the last LGBT Rep, let me know if you have any ‘queeries’…

Equal Opportunities Rep

Miriam Mahmoud
Hey, I’m Miriam and I will be the Equal Opportunities Rep at Catz for the next year. My role is to ensure equality within the college and for college members within the university, so if you ever have any concerns relating to equality issues, please don’t hesitate to contact me!
I will also be organising college families and match new freshers and visiting students with college parents to make the transition to Catz as smooth and easy as possible and to make sure everybody feels included and welcome here at Catz.Furthermore, I’m in charge of organising the Catz Equal Opportunities Lecture, so if you have any requests, ideas or wishes for speakers you would like to hear, please feel free to make suggestions.

Careers & Academic Affairs Rep

Anirudh Mandagere
Hey I’m Anirudh, a second-year historian, and your JCR Careers and Academic Affairs Rep for the year ahead! My role involves attending the student liaison committee meetings twice a term, and attending library committee meetings to discuss issues that have arisen in the previous term. In addition to this, I am in charge with liaising with companies outside of Oxford to provide graduate recruitment events for Catz students. Look out for more recruitment events in the year ahead, which will come from a range of employment sectors. Feel free to get in touch with me if you have any concerns with academic work, or if you have any contacts that would want to host such events at St Catz.

Access Rep

Michael Fernando
Hey! I am Michael, your Catz Access rep. My job is to liaise with schools and potential applicants, trying to reduce barriers to a fair and equal admissions process. I arrange visits to schools and my main job this term is setting up an access team. I am the first point of call if you want to give a talk to your old school. I am also going to be updating the website with a new easy to use access page, that has all information on access work and fee support in one place. Please get in touch if you want any information on getting involved in access work.

Visiting Student Rep

Jess Adler
Hey guys! I’m Jessica, a third year bi-coastal American, and your current Visiting Student Representative. As such, I am here to help you answer any questions you might have as an incoming or current Visiting Student, so that you can have the best experience possible while at Catz. I am also your acting liaison for any questions you might have for the committee. Here at Catz, I organize your events, take your issues to JCR meetings, and work to bring Visiting Students and the Catz community together.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me!
